democrat just lost two elections in a row to ronald reagan. what did we do? we nominated michael dukakis who is a fine man but a liberal from massachusetts. it took three beatings for to us realize you have to make common cause of moderates. that is the internal struggle the republican have to go through. true to principle on fiscal issues but if they embrace the far right social agenda it drives off the young people and alienate single women and suburban women and you see it in the numbers. >> senator, in your state of indiana -- >> can i say one last thing? if i could just get -- if i could say one last thing. please continue to nominate people for public office talking about women being rap rapeed. >> won by only five points such a bad year. republicans should not kid themselves. republican lost 25 of 33 senate seats. republicans gained back the seats easy to gain back when no other new state at the presidential level. obama had a tough economy, glow gone from the first term, and all of that. republicans lost the national household by half a million votes.

ronald reagan made his progress with the soviets in the second term. bill clinton almost got a middle east peace deal in the second term. so i do think there's a sense when you look abroad the president has more opportunities to leave a mark. >> john do you think, those that the scandal involving cia director former cia director david petraeus could derail the efforts he's trying to get going here? >> this one won't derail it but it's a very good example of the kind of thing that tends to turn up for season in more in a second term. you know iran-contra for president reagan rather famously president clinton's impeachment was in the second term. so it may not be this one, but, you know there is kind of a coincidence that time consuming scandals do pop up in those last four years. >> it's interesting you bring up legacy. one of the issues with the fiscal cliff is what kind of legacy would john boehner or the president leave behind when they leave office if they can't get a deal done and what about a second term compromising and going your own route. >> t

you know, since ronald reagan we no longer have 70% tax rates on the highest income earners. nobody is arguing for that. we're arguing to go back to 39.6%. on health care reform, the president's health care reform was basically a conservative idea put into the national spotlight by democrats and passed by democrats. education reform. even cap and trade is really a republican approach to solving environmental problems. we no longer have anyone saying we don't need to balance the budget. in a lot of ways these conservative ideas have won the day. so republicans are in a place where they moved further and further to the right as the democratic party has amoved further and further to the right. now they're out in the mainstream, and in order to have a meaningful, stark contrast with democrats, they've gone to such a far right place that the american people just aren't comfortable with what they propose. >> i'm encouraged by some of the language i heard coming from some folks on the right. there's still people in conservative circles who are saying we can't compromise our values.

reagan on social security reform we can add years of solvency and to medicare and do it and increase benefits like with obama care and we need both sides to be willing. i know the democrats are willing. president obama's willing to sit down at the table. what we don't need to do i can tell you is cut benefits. that's something that i don't think is the first thing that should be put forward. we have a lot of opportunity to continue to make reforms in medicare, make sure we build in more efficiencies to the program so we can add the years of solvency. >> what about eligibility age change? >> well, eligibility age change would fall in the realm of benefit cuts. we need to focus like i said first on making sure we build in more efficiencies to the program. we have been able to from obama care make sure that with that $716 billion in savings plowed in to waste, fraud and abuse -- fighting waste, fraud and abuse we have collected more than $10 billion in fraudulent medicare payments and we can make more progress in that area, as well. >> thank you so much. i greatly appreciate you joining

so by the end of the year ronald reagan is clearly going to run for governor, as you point out in 1966, and does, and beats pat brown, who four years earlier had beaten nixon in the race for governor. >> host: what i always found most amaze about the great society in effect it comes out of nowhere. there's no predicate for it. we know the new deal comes out of the turmoil of the great depression. you can even argue that obamacare -- we can call it that -- obamacare comes oust the great recession. where in the world does the great society come from? i think you answer that question, and it's -- i was a kid during this period, and seven years old, in 1965, and i remember in '64, we went around the neighborhood, all-black communities, saying, we won the war of 196 4. and this was about the election of lbj. and it was a sense that something important happened. but one could not predict the revolution in social policy that became the great society. and your answer for all that seems to be -- it's the sheer wealth of america. is it -- cue talk about that? >> guest: yes. the economy had been
